I Received Unexpected Medical Bills After Being Admitted To A Private Hospital.

November 10 / 2025 / 3:26 PM

Q: I was admitted to a private hospital and when I got home, I received unexpected medical bills that I can’t afford. What should I do?

A: First things first – don’t ignore them. You need to swing into action and take some quick, practical steps.

Ask for proof of Informed Financial Consent where you allegedly agreed to these fees –  especially if you don’t recall doing so. They are required to show you exactly what you agreed to pay and when.

Lodge your claims straight away while you are corresponding with them. It’s called a “two-way claim” that you need to submit through your myGov app. Your rebates or cheques should arrive quickly.

If you didn’t agree to the charges, when the cheques arrive, send them to the provider with a short covering letter (I’ll happily draft one for you) explaining that:

  • You did not agree to the fees being charged.
  • You will not be paying any further amount.
  • You have reported the matter to AHPRA for investigation.

If they continue to demand payment or engage debt collectors – contact me.
You have rights, and there are legal and regulatory steps we can take.
